ERP Exposure Response Prevention / EXRP trainings as the primary intervention for OCD

Welcome to my OCD training blog post! This post will discuss ERP Exposure Response Prevention / EXRP trainings as the primary intervention for OCD, where to find a low cost training, and become certified to improve confidence in efficacy for mental health consumers.

OCD, or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, is a mental health condition that is characterized by obsessions and/or compulsions. Obsessions are intrusive, unwanted thoughts, images, or urges that cause anxiety or distress. Compulsions are repetitive behaviors or mental rituals that someone feels they must do in order to relieve their anxiety or distress. OCD can be a very debilitating condition, but there is hope! With proper treatment, many people with OCD are able to live happy, healthy lives.

Clinician Barriers to Training
Obsessive-compulsive disorder treatment can improve or eliminate symptoms so that they improve daily life for those who suffer from OCD. The American Psychological Associations Division 12 has listed Exposure response prevention is the main Cognitive Behavioral Therapy treatment for OCD. There are several ERP / EXRP trainings around the county but a key barrier often noted are cost related to the training itself, travel as well as accommodations to the in person sites, and the attached continuing education credits

ERP / EXRP
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), a type of psychotherapy, is effective for many people with OCD. Exposure and response prevention (ERP), a component of CBT therapy, involves gradually exposing feared objects or obsessions and having one learn ways to resist the urge to the compulsive rituals. ERP / EXRP takes effort and practice. There is research that show didactic education where by attending formal class setting learning match with real life application in the clinical setting is best for mastery.
